non-toxic everything !!!
lol the buzzword of the year! But it feels only fitting to write my next post about our toxic everything lives - and how I’ve found this new way of living.
It wasn't until one of my latest health flares that I started questioning literally every part of my home (& life) - a total environment reset. And honestly, it was the most rude awakening I've had in years.
Even with a quick google search - "The most toxic substances in the environment include heavy metals (lead, mercury, arsenic), industrial chemicals like PFAS ("forever chemicals") and PCBs, asbestos, and various pesticides, which contaminate air, water, and food. These persistent, bioaccumulative toxins cause cancer, reproductive disorders, and neurological damage, often found in household dust, water, and products. These substances are considered highly dangerous because they do not easily break down and can accumulate in human tissue over time."
FOREVER CHEMICALS?!?!? IN OUR HOUSEHOLD PRODUCTS?
Like what does this even mean?? Yes, we know the US is notorious for our pesticides / GMOs / etc. when it comes to food, but why are we putting literal toxins in people's everyday products…
At first it kind of scared me - I've been living with so many invisible toxins my whole life and had no idea. Then it made me really angry - it almost feels impossible to live a healthy life in the US these days.
Now that I've replaced almost everything in my home with alternatives, I'm more at peace with it, but I can't stop thinking of how many people's environments are still filled with these things. And how we can make it super easy to swap them out.
If you're still not convinced - these chemicals are literally built to interfere with living systems - your body being a big one.
Pesticides stress the liver, disrupt gut health, interfere with hormones, and increase inflammation. Synthetic fragrances can trigger headaches, breathing issues, and quietly disrupt the nervous and hormonal systems. Plastics and BPA/BPS leach chemicals that mimic estrogen, disrupt thyroid and reproductive health, and accumulate over time.
They're mostly found in non-organic produce, lawn sprays, cleaning and beauty products, scented items, food packaging, water bottles, canned linings, receipts. Easy peasy, right??
The danger isn't one exposure - it's daily, cumulative disruption - slowly overwhelming the systems that regulate mood, metabolism, fertility, and long-term health.
Do with it what you will, but here are some easy swaps I made that have made a huge difference in my peace of mind.
Kitchen
Beauty
Toothbrush / electric heads
Men's & women's deodorant (we are obsessed… it actually works!!)
Home
Safe cleaning supplies - LOVE this brand and they make it so easy - one solution for everything, with different proportions of water to dilute. Laundry, dish soap, bathroom cleaner, mirror / glass cleaner. It's amaze.
Hand soap - same brand :) OBSESSED
Candles - we actually make our own now :) SO easy, fun, & saves you $$$
Wood & metal furniture when possible
100% organic cotton, linen, and wool <3
I know it can be a lot… but just start with one small area, and as you need to "refill" your home, you can slowly start questioning what you own, and dive into alternative swaps. I think you'll be surprised at how addicting it is to feel safe and clean in your home.
The app YUKA is also amazing!!! You scan barcodes on most foods and products to see what is really harmful, and what you could probably keep around. Just beware that once you start, it's really hard to see life any other way lol.
